I

To be cultured is the only way to be free -
Martí said it, lived it, practiced it.
Without culture, no freedom is possible -
Fidel expands it, lives it, practices it…

If Venezuela's government is a dictatorship, why have there been 18 elections in 15 years under the late president Hugo Chávez Frías (d. 2013) and his democratically elected successor Nicolás Maduro? Why is it that according to many international observers Venezuela's democratic elections are, in the words of ex-president Jimmy Carter, "the best in the world"?

CALL FROM UNITED STATES TO SAVE FIRST PEOPLES FESTIVAL IN CANADA

Is it possible for the First Peoples to hold a festival worthy of the name in the famous city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada? This insulting question has brutally come to the fore because the Partenariat du Quartier des spectacles (the PQDS), the para-municipal body that funds and administers programs in support of cultural events in the Downtown district, has decided to cut off ALL grants to the 24-year-old, world renowned First Peoples Festival for the year 2014.
